I am feared, hidden, whispered about in hushed voices. I do not rest in temples, nor am I placed on sacred altars. I am not worshipped, yet I have shaped destinies. I have ended wars, silenced kings, and stolen breath from both the innocent and the guilty.

I am the Noose, the final judge, the silent executioner, the loop that tightens when fate commands it.

https://media.cnn.com/api/v1/images/stellar/prod/200622181858-noose-stock.jpg?q=w_1600,h_1067,x_0,y_0,c_fill

I begin as a simple rope, woven by hands unaware of the fate I am destined to be. Perhaps I was meant for something else like to bind, to hold, to pull weight across lands. But somewhere along the way, my purpose changed. I was twisted into a perfect circle, a loop with only one meaning. My existence is neither accidental nor ordinary because I was shaped with intention, the intention to end, to decide and to pass judgment where no words remain.

I have felt the trembling hands of a king, his breath uneven as his final decree is ignored. I have heard the cries of revolutionaries whose voices were stolen before they could change the world. I have tightened around the throats of the guilty who begged for mercy but received none. And yet, I have also embraced the innocent, those who were condemned by a justice that was never just.

I am not evil, nor am I righteous. I am merely the moment between life and death, the final pause before silence. I do not question, I only listen.

I am the last witness to stories that will never be told. When a young boy hangs in a dimly lit hostel room in Kota, crushed by the weight of a future he could not endure, I am there. When an exhausted aspirant in Delhi whispers an apology to her parents before stepping onto the chair, I hear it.

https://static.toiimg.com/thumb/msid-98123735,width-400,resizemode-4/98123735.jpg

They pray not for life, but for escape. They ask for forgiveness, not from the world, but from themselves. And in those final moments, as the chair tips, as the body surrenders, as hope dies, I hold them. I do what no one else did, I hold on to them.

But while I hear their stories, I also see the ones who should have been mine but never were.

The men who violated innocence, who stole lives but still walk freely, untouched by justice. The ones who laughed in the face of the law after Nirbhaya, after Hyderabad, after every woman who screamed for mercy and found none. The ones who sit in power, their hands stained, their sins masked by wealth and status. They are never brought to me.

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRty9yELeagcjdJYkmcp2LO2qc4-aQquxrdGA&s

Instead, I hold the ones who should have lived, the dreamers, the broken, the defeated. I take the ones who deserved a second chance, while those who should have met me are given a lifetime of freedom.

If I could choose, if I could wrap myself around the necks of those who truly deserve me, would that finally give my existence meaning? Would it make my touch just? Would it make my circle less cruel?

But I do not choose. I only wait.

And where I end, I also begin. My fibers unravel, my loop is broken, and soon, I am woven into something new. Perhaps I return as a simple rope once again, probably tied to an ox pulling a plow, bound around wood for a sacred pyre, holding together the mast of a ship that sails toward new lands. I never know what I will become next, but I definitely know this:

I will always return. I will always find my way back to that perfect circle, where the beginning and the end are the same.

I am the Noose. I am fate’s hand and history’s witness. I am the end of one story and the start of another.

That’s exactly what Huawei’s Seeds for the Future 2024 program did for me. This journey was more than just an opportunity—it was a profound experience that combined technology, culture, and collaboration. Along the way, I discovered the power of innovation and connection, leaving me with lessons to cherish for a lifetime.

The Beginning: Planting the Seed

The journey started in May 2024, when Huawei announced applications for their prestigious Seeds for the Future program. As a final-year Computer Engineering student, I was drawn to the program’s promise of exploring technology’s potential to solve real-world problems.

By June 13, I was thrilled to find my name among 30 selected candidates for the first round. What followed was a series of exciting milestones:

June 18: A UNESCO workshop on AI ethics introduced us to the importance of ethical considerations in innovation.

June 21: Visits to the Ncell Data Center and Incessant Rain Studios revealed how Nepal’s tech landscape is evolving.

July 1: The final interviews tested our technical and non-technical skills, pushing us to articulate our visions for the future.

Finally, on July 12, the results came in. Six of us were selected to represent Nepal in the regional rounds in China. Team Nepal—comprising Samriddhi Karki, Sadhana Panthi, Angelina Ghimire, Aashish Karki, Sameep Aryal, and me—was ready to take on the world stage.

A Celebration of Culture and Connection

Our adventure in China began with the Global Village event. Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, we showcased Nepal’s rich heritage through dance, food, and stories. The event highlighted the beauty of cultural exchange, as we connected with participants from diverse backgrounds.

This celebration set the tone for the next chapter of our journey—one defined by creativity, collaboration, and competition.

Tech4Good: Innovating for Impact

The Tech4Good competition was the heart of our journey. For weeks, we brainstormed and refined our project, which we called UltraCare.

Designed to address maternal health challenges in rural Nepal, UltraCare offered:

Solar-powered functionality for areas with limited electricity.

Local language integration for accessibility.

AI algorithms for early detection of obstetric complications.

Our hard work paid off when we won the People’s Choice Award. It wasn’t just a victory for Team Nepal—it was a testament to how technology, when guided by empathy, can create meaningful change.

Beyond the Competition: Unforgettable Experiences

China offered more than just the competition. The experiences we shared broadened our horizons and left us inspired:

The Donguan Campus Visit: Walking through this enchanting campus felt like stepping into a fairy tale. From the serene library to the architectural wonders, every moment was magical.

The Cruise Day: Under a starlit sky, we celebrated the end of our journey with laughter, tears, and heartfelt goodbyes. It was a bittersweet moment that captured the essence of our shared adventure.

Lessons for Nepal: Inspired by China

Reflecting on my time in China, several key lessons stand out:

Invest in Talent: Nepal can address its brain drain by creating environments where individuals feel inspired to stay and contribute.

Foster Local Innovation: China’s success with platforms like Baidu and TikTok proves the potential of homegrown talent.

Prioritize Visionary Leadership: Political stability and entrepreneurial support are crucial for progress.

Above all, the collective culture of prioritizing the greater good over individual gains was deeply inspiring.

API_KEY=your_google_api_key_here

This setup ensures your API key remains secure and is not hard-coded in your scripts.

Setting Up the Generative Model

Next, import the required libraries and configure the Generative AI model using your API key:

Python Code

import google.generativeai as genai
import os
from dotenv import load_dotenv

# Load API key from .env file
load_dotenv()
google_api_key = os.getenv('API_KEY')

# Configure the Generative AI model
genai.configure(api_key=google_api_key)

Generating Content

With the model set up, you can now generate content. Here’s a simple example to get you started:

Python Code

response = model.generate_content("Hello! Can you introduce yourself?")
print(response.text)

Output

The output will be a friendly introduction generated by the AI.

Implementing Automated Conversations

To create an interactive automated conversation, you can use a loop that continuously sends user inputs to the model and prints the responses. Here’s how you can do it:

model = genai.GenerativeModel('models/gemini-pro')
chat = model.start_chat()

def automated_conversation():
    while True:
  user_input = input("You: ")
        if user_input.lower() == "exit":
            print("Conversation ended.")
            break
        response = chat.send_message(user_input)
        print("AI:", response.text)

# Start the automated conversation
automated_conversation()

Output:

This script initiates a chat session and allows for an ongoing conversation with the AI until the user types “exit”.

Conclusion

We aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementations, making this venture an invaluable learning opportunity. Applying economic formulas became essential as we delved into comparing the best options among various alternatives.Before embarking on this venture, we engaged in crucial economic analyses, such as cost-benefit assessments, calculating rates of return, and determining the timeframe for recouping the invested capital. Understanding fundamental economic factors like interest rates, depreciation rates, and the post-use value of equipment played a pivotal role in evaluating the financial viability of The Coffee Shop.

In the broader context of project management, we recognized the significance of resource allocation, including materials, funds, labor, and time. Engineers leading such endeavors must navigate budget constraints, especially when faced with limited resources. This project has not only allowed us to explore the intricate economic considerations within the business realm but also provided practical insights into effective resource management.

Project Motivation:

The motivation behind The Coffee Shop stems from a desire to create more than just a conventional coffee spot. In our research and observations, we recognized a gap in the market for a space that seamlessly integrates the elegance and class of a premium café with the youthful vibrancy of a social hub. Our vision is to provide a haven for the community, where every sip of coffee is accompanied by a symphony of joy, peace, and the aroma of freshly brewed beans.

Payback Period

From the graph above, the payback period is 2.91 years, meaning the coffee shop takes 2.91 years to earn enough money to recover the initial investment.

Applications of Money-Time Relationship:

Internal Rate of Return:

To calculate the Net Present Value (NPV) of a series of cash flows, we need to estimate the timing and amount of future cash flows and pick a discount rate equal to the minimum acceptable rate of return. The formula for NPV of a project with multiple cash flows is as follows:

NPV=t=0∑n(1+i)tRt−C0

where Rt is the net cash inflow-outflows during a single period t, i is the discount rate or return that could be earned in alternative investments, t is the number of periods, and C0 is the initial investment

Using the given cash flows, we can calculate the NPV of the project as follows:

NPV=(1+0.1)1628546.64+(1+0.1)22168422.71+(1+0.1)32938360.75+(1+0.1)42938360.75+(1+0.1)52938360.75+(1+0.1)66318112.90−5500000.00

CALCULATION OF IRR

NPV = 0

IRR = 35%

Project Duration

The time over which cash flows will be analyzed is considered to be 6 years.

Cost & Benefit Estimation Techniques:

The Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) is a ratio used in a cost-benefit analysis to summarize the overall relationship between the relative costs and benefits of a proposed project. It can be expressed in monetary or qualitative terms.

The formula for calculating the BCR is as follows:

BCR = Total Annual Benefits/ Total Annual Costs

Using the values you provided, the BCR would be:

BCR = Total Annual Benefits/Total Annual Costs

= NPR 17,699,725/ NPR 12,460,400

= 1.42

Since the BCR is greater than 1, the project is expected to deliver a positive net present value to the firm and its investors. This suggests that the NPV of the project’s cash flows outweighs the NPV of the costs, and the project should be considered.

Depreciation

Sensitivity analysis:

Conclusion from Sensitivity Analysis:

The sensitivity analysis conducted on Capital Investment, Annual Investment, Variable Cost and time reveals that Annual Revenue is the most sensitive to alterations in factors under consideration. Therefore, careful attention and strategic management should be directed toward those elements influencing annual revenue to ensure optimal performance and financial stability.

Conclusion

In a comprehensive examination of the financial prospects for ‘The Coffee Shop’ project, it emerges as a robust and promising venture, affirming its potential for sustainable profitability and a favorable return on investment. The stringent evaluation, guided by a Minimum Acceptable Rate of Return (MARR) of 10%, illuminates the project’s financial strength and resilience. The Internal Rate of Return (IRR) takes center stage as a pivotal metric, standing impressively at 35%. This figure significantly outpaces the MARR, portraying ‘The Coffee Shop’ as an investment that not only meets but surpasses anticipated returns, rendering it an appealing proposition for potential stakeholders. Beyond the compelling IRR, the project’s efficiency in recouping the initial investment is exemplified by a notably short payback period of approximately 2.91 years. This expedited recovery timeline not only underscores the financial stability of ‘The Coffee Shop’ but also positions it as a venture capable of delivering swift and tangible returns. The combination of a robust IRR, a swift payback period, and adherence to the stipulated MARR collectively paints a picture of a meticulously planned and financially sound project. ‘The Coffee Shop’ not only stands as a testament to its economic viability but also positions itself as a beacon of success in the competitive landscape of the coffee industry. With an all-encompassing financial strategy, the project is poised for not just profitability but sustained and thriving success in the dynamic market it aims to serve.

It all started with the ML Bootcamp 2023 Phase 1, a two-week workshop that promised to take us from coding novices to machine learning experts. As I stepped into the workshop on the first day, I was greeted by a sea of unfamiliar faces, all eager and excited to learn. There was a buzz in the air, a feeling of anticipation and nervousness that seemed to envelop us all.

But as the coordinators kicked off the workshop with warm smiles and welcoming words, I felt my nerves begin to dissipate. The first few days were filled with the basics – Python syntax, numpy, pandas – but even those seemingly mundane topics were infused with a sense of wonder and creativity.

ML Boot Camp phase 1

As the days went on, we delved deeper into the world of machine learning – exploring the intricacies of regression models, decision trees, and clustering algorithms. The datasets we worked with were complex and varied, but with each passing day, we became more adept at extracting insights and making predictions.

Of course, it wasn’t all work and no play – there were plenty of moments of levity and fun to be had. From the daily quizzes that challenged our knowledge to the impromptu question-answer sessions, there was never a dull moment.
But perhaps the most memorable part of the workshop was the sense of camaraderie and community that developed among us. We came from all walks of life – different backgrounds, different experiences, different goals – but we were united by a shared passion for machine learning. We worked together, helped each other, and cheered each other on every step of the way.

The ML bootcamp that began with a participation of 55 ended with 15 and me being the only girl. I wish I could see more enthusiastic girls who were actively participating during the start of the workshop remain with us till the end. Anyways, I am hopeful that things will change.

In the end, the fruitful session from Mala Deep Upadhayay was really inspiring. I feel fortunate to have received this opportunity to be a part of the ML community. Sometimes I shock myself with the kind of plots I am able to visualize using the datasets and all this credit goes to our ML coordinators.

Hats off to Anish Manandar and Anurag Timalsina for the successful completion of ML boot camp. Also, Thank you Aadarsha Dhakal for always being there helping us with the technical difficulties and adding enthusiasm to the bootcamp.

In short, the ML Bootcamp 2023 was a life-changing experience – one that I will always treasure.

On a busy morning, I found myself in a rush of activity as I prepared for my trip to Dhulikhel. Fumbling through my belongings, I felt the pressure of time as my classes were starting at 9 and the clock already read 7. Despite the chaos, I pushed myself to gather all the necessary items and double-check everything. Feeling a sense of relief, I decided to opt for a ride-sharing app called inDrive to make it to Koteshwor and from there I could take a bus.

As I received the ride request from a female rider, a wave of mixed emotions engulfed me. It was a feeling I had never experienced before, one that strangely brought back memories of my very first ride. That ride had taken place during my 12th boards amidst the Covid pandemic, and it was an experience I will never forget. The rider was clearly reckless, driving at breakneck speeds that a normal person would never reach. I remember feeling a surge of adrenaline as the bike leaned at an acute angle on the road, and the wind whipped through my hair with relentless fury. At that moment, exams were the last thing on my mind, I just wanted to reach college safely. Despite my fears and doubts, I couldn’t bring myself to ask the rider to slow down. Maybe I was too scared as it was my first. Anyways, looking back, I realized that it was a missed opportunity to prioritize my safety and well-being.

Fast forward to today, after four years of being a regular customer and exploring various ride-sharing options, I received a ride request from a female rider for the first time. I accepted the request and began actively seeking out female drivers while waiting for her. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were quite a few, I wondered how I didn’t notice them until today. As I waited patiently for my ride, I noticed on the app that the rider was heading toward a different location. Despite it being late for my classes and having already waited for 10 minutes, I thought of taking another ride. But I didn’t want to miss out on the experience of riding with a female rider. So, I called her several times to inform her of my correct location, and finally, after a couple of minutes, she arrived. I got on the back of the bike, and we started our journey to Koteshwor.

It indeed was a comfortable ride, but also a memorable one. In the end, I gave her a rating of 5 stars, even though she was quite late. For me, it was more important to support her efforts than to let a minor inconvenience get in the way. While I acknowledge that everyone may have a different approach to the situation, for me, supporting such endeavors is a priority. It isn’t every day that you get to see a woman in a heavily male-dominated profession.

This experience was truly unforgettable and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Happy Women’s Day!

Let us imagine a world where it is impossible to distinguish between a human and a machine. Is this imagination even possible? If yes, How would such a world function? Will machines rule over mankind? And many more such questions might be striking your brain at the moment but before that, there is something you need to understand “what makes us different from a machine?” Well, it is our ability to “think”.

And this was the central argument put forward by the computer science pioneer Alan Turing in 1950 in his paper entitled “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” which asks “Can machines think?” Turing did not just propose the question but he also attempted to find an answer by suggesting a simple test that is presently known as the “Turing test”. It is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior identical to, or not differentiable from, that of a human being. In simple words, a machine is supposed to mimic a human to pass this test. During the test, there are three players say A, B, and C. Here player C, the interrogator, has the task of trying to determine which of the player – A or B – is a human and which is a machine. And if the interrogator misidentifies the machine as a human then the machine passes the Turing test.

In the current scenario, we have seen several pieces of AI software that have beaten the Turing test. And as we’re entering the age of artificial intelligence where AI programs are getting better and better at mimicking humans, there will always be a question of whether there’s really anything that makes human intelligence special, or are we just machines of a different kind?

In the future, after passing the Turing test, let us consider all the machines will exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to a human; thus, it becomes impossible to distinguish between a machine from a human. In that case, all the work will be done by vast, highly organized systems of machines without the requirement of human beings.

The emotions produced in a human’s body due to chemical reactions can be converted into respective algorithms and fed into a machine resulting in a robot with emotions, feelings, and intelligence. So after 50 years from now, the girl you chat with till late at night might actually be a machine that is capable of understanding you at an emotional level. The secretary you have hired may not necessarily be a human because a machine with a human level of intelligence can handle your finances much better. So, the day is not far when machines would not just mimic humans but will eventually replace them.

Let’s take an example of the recently launched ChatGPT, an AI tool that everybody’s talking about. It can pretty much do everything beyond what we imagined a BOT was capable of doing. It is smart enough to not just understand and process human language but it produces human-like responses. If it didn’t mention that it was “an artificial intelligence language model created by OpenAI” after every tricky question we asked to confirm its identity, we would have hardly recognized him as a bot.

Before chatGPT, Every time we came across a difficult problem, the first thing we did was google it. From business strategies to relationship advice, we have faith in google because somewhere we are sure that it can give us better suggestions. But ChatGPT has changed everything, It often comes with the most optimized solutions for any problem. We are slowly losing the ability to think ourselves because such tools have made all kinds of information readily available to us and we no more need to memorize anything. Forget about memorizing, we don’t even feel the necessity of understanding anything. This dependency on technology is just a small picture of what the future holds. (We will be talking in depth about ChatGPT in the next blog.)

It might be argued that the human race will be wise enough to not hand over all their power to machines. Yes, the human race would never voluntarily turn power over to the machines, and the machines won’t willfully seize it (I doubt a little, just watched M3GAN a couple of days ago). What I am trying to suggest is that the human race might easily permit itself to be in such a position of dependency on machines that it would prefer to accept all of the machines’ decisions.

With problems faced by societies becoming more and more complex, machines have become more and more intelligent. People are willing to let machines make more of their decisions merely because machine-made decisions will yield better results.

To sum up, passing the Turing test might pave a positive path for the progress of the world by enhancing the economy, making life easier, etc. whereas, there is a possibility of it leading to the replacement of humans from their respective jobs. However, I strongly believe that the use of technology is in our hands and as the future is unpredictable, the results after passing the Turing test remain unpredictable too. (A safe ending …. Tadaaa)

Have you ever wondered why even in the worst situations of our life, we try searching for the lesson that is being taught to us, even after facing adversities, we wait that one day for things to turn around and the way we get over failures thinking that, there might be greater plans waiting? It is because we believe in the higher, unseen, controlling power of religion. The religious views that “everything happens for a reason” and “god has better plans for you” give us hope that can be comforting in difficult times making life seem less chaotic.

Hope forms the foundation of every religion teaching us to enhance acceptance, endurance, and resilience. That’s why there is this saying in Sanskrit
Aasha jiwanhetu; swatrirasha mrityukaranam ||
Meaning that hope inspires life and despair attracts death.

Often in our lives, we tend to forget that mental health not only involves the freedom from mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and psychotic conditions, but it also involves the regular experience of positive emotions, such as joy, wonder, happiness, satisfaction, purpose, and hope. This is when righteousness comes into play.

Religious beliefs generate peace, self-confidence, purpose, forgiveness for the individual’s own failures, and a positive self-image. That is why, of approximately 100 studies conducted on religiousness and well-being, nearly 80% have found that religious people experience significantly more positive emotions compared to those who are less religious.

Let’s talk about the latter 20 percent, Religious beliefs include not only positive emotions but some negative emotions too. They can bring guilt, doubts, anxiety, and depression through enhanced self-criticism. For example, Excessive sexual activity is decried by most religions, and therefore, it may arouse a strong sense of guilt or anxiety in many. Similarly, any violation of religious rituals intentionally or unintentionally can generate considerable guilt.

I am pretty sure all of you have heard this statement, “your children will trouble you twice more than you trouble your parents”. We are constantly being reminded that what we do comes back to us one day (Karma) causing us to self-reflect in a way that we feel the necessity of confining ourselves to the norms of society.

A guy who is sure to fail his exams still takes it because he dwells in the positivity that something magical might happen. But it won’t. He just develops this passive waiting for god to handle a particular situation which further leads him to self-disappointments in life. Moreover, Religion teaches us not to question things and encourages people to believe in superstitions. For example, the idea: if you pray for something, god will make it happen.

We have been living with such superstitions because it is instilled in our minds from a very young age. In addition to that; religion has played a major role in many wars throughout world history. However, I strongly believe that even if there were no religion we humans would find something else to start a war over.

Religion is as old as mankind. Primitive man had primitive religions, they worshiped the elements of nature like the sun, earth, air, water, etc., Advances in civilization led to institutionalized religions. But the basic characteristics of all religions are similar. There is a firm belief in a universal force. Religion appeared to be a psychological necessity for mankind which later metamorphosed. With time, religious practices have turned into dogmas and superstitions. Although, most religions progress with time many become fossilized completely.

From mental health, perspective religion provides much-needed guidelines, which can help individuals to tolerate the stress, strains as well as uncertainties of life. However, many outmoded rituals and belief systems inhibit positive growth and may lead to mental health issues.

Therefore, the answer to the question of whether religion has beneficial or detrimental effects on the mental well-being of the adult individual is debatable. However, I personally believe that the positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects. The effect of religion on mental health has long been debated and remains controversial despite some positive findings in reviews of empirical research. The most plausible explanation for these mixed results is that the relationship between religion and mental health is not robust and is sensitive to the definitions adopted, the measures employed, and the samples studied.
